Pokopia launches with huge sales momentum

Pokémon Pokopia is already one of the Nintendo Switch 2’s biggest hits, only days after release.

Nintendo says the Pokémon spinoff sold over 2.2 million copies in its first four days on sale.

That total includes about 1 million copies in Japan alone, highlighting the franchise’s continued strength in its home market.

Those early numbers instantly push the game into the top five best-selling Switch 2 titles so far.

Current rankings based on Nintendo’s reported sales:

  • Mario Kart World – 14.03 million
  • Donkey Kong Bananza – 4.25 million
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition – 3.89 million
  • Pokémon Pokopia – 2.2 million
  • Kirby Air Riders – 1.76 million

There is a small caveat.

Sales figures for the other titles cover all of 2025, while Pokopia’s 2.2 million only reflects its first four days on sale in 2026.

Even so, landing near the top of the chart this quickly is a major early win.

Switch 2’s steady stream of first-party hits

Pokopia’s success is also notable because Switch 2 owners haven’t exactly lacked big releases.

Nintendo has pushed out a steady pipeline of first-party games since the console launched.

Recent highlights include:

  • Metroid Prime 4, which arrived in December
  • Mario Tennis Fever, released in February
  • The Star-Crossed World expansion for Kirby and the Forgotten Land

That pace means new games are competing with a constant stream of fresh releases.

Despite that crowded calendar, Pokopia still managed to break into the platform’s top sellers almost immediately.

One of the most successful Pokémon spinoffs

The game is also performing strongly compared with past Pokémon spinoff titles.

According to Pokémon historian Joe Merrick, Pokopia becomes one of just 13 Pokémon spinoffs to pass 2 million copies sold.

That is notable considering the franchise has produced dozens of side games across nine generations.

Pokopia also benefited from strong early demand for physical copies.

At one point shortly after launch:

  • Physical copies briefly sold out at several retailers
  • Amazon temporarily raised the price to about $80
  • The price has since returned to $69.99 as supply improved

Strong reviews add momentum

Sales aren’t the only indicator of success.

Pokopia is also currently one of the best-reviewed Switch 2 games so far.

The game sits at:

  • 89 on Metacritic
  • 89 on OpenCritic

That combination of strong reviews and high demand is helping the game maintain momentum during its launch window.

Nintendo stock reacts to Pokopia demand

Investor interest has followed the strong debut.

A recent report from Bloomberg says Nintendo’s stock jumped more than 10%, partly driven by excitement around Pokopia’s early performance.

While that surge reflects broader optimism around the Switch 2 lineup, Pokopia’s strong launch has clearly helped fuel the momentum.

If sales continue at this pace, the Pokémon spinoff could climb even higher on the console’s all-time sales list in the months ahead.

Our take

Pokémon Pokopia’s fast start shows something important about Nintendo’s strategy right now.

The company isn’t relying only on massive tentpole releases like Mario Kart or a mainline Pokémon RPG. It is also using smaller but polished spinoffs to keep the release calendar full.

That approach is working.

Switch 2 owners are getting something new almost every month, which keeps engagement high and helps maintain hardware momentum.

Pokopia also proves that the Pokémon brand still has huge power even outside its main RPG series.

If Nintendo and The Pokémon Company keep pairing recognizable Pokémon characters with strong gameplay ideas, we will likely see more experimental Pokémon projects on Switch 2.

And if Pokopia keeps selling anywhere near this pace, it could easily move into the top three Switch 2 titles before long.
