Fortnite Save the World Now Free-to-Play for Everyone
Epic Games has made Fortnite Save the World free-to-play and added a big Homebase rework, new progression changes, and crossover rewards.
Epic opens Save the World
Fortnite Save the World is now officially free-to-play, ending one of the longest paid-access runs in Fortnite history and bringing the co-op mode to more players, including Nintendo Switch 2.
Epic announced the change in a detailed update post, alongside a broad refresh to progression, social features, and Homebase itself.
Players who pre-registered before April 16 get unlocked community rewards, while existing owners are receiving loyalty bonuses including Superchargers, Vouchers, and Gold. Epic’s full rundown is here.
Homebase becomes a real hub
The biggest visible change is a new explorable Homebase that replaces the old menu-heavy front end with a two-floor social space that changes as players progress.
Epic also reworked progression with updated Schematics, simplified XP resources, and rewards that scale with mission difficulty.
- Auto-leveling can now upgrade active Heroes, Defenders, and Survivor squads with People XP.
- Battle Royale keybinds can now carry over into Save the World.
- The Shop and V-Bucks tabs are back in the lobby.
Defenders get a major overhaul
Defenders now follow players into combat instead of staying tied to posts. They also no longer consume ammo, their weapons no longer lose durability, and they can revive downed teammates.
That looks like one of the patch’s biggest gameplay changes, especially for solo players. But early player reactions are mixed, with some praising the rework and others saying high-level Defenders feel weaker and complaining that weapon choice appears to be gone.
Battle Royale crossover starts now
A crossover running through June 5 adds Jess and Penny quests on the Battle Royale island, with Battle Pass XP and Save the World rewards tied to completion.
Players can unlock the Super Shredder Schematic in Save the World, while earning 350,000 XP in the mode unlocks the Jess Outfit.
Epic is also running Twitch Drops from April 16 through April 20, including a spray, emoticon, and the Legendary Urban Assault Headhunter Hero.
The big picture: after years of uncertainty, Epic is treating Save the World less like a legacy side mode and more like a live part of Fortnite again.
