Metro 2039 gets first reveal date in Xbox-backed stream
4A Games has announced Metro 2039 and will fully reveal it on April 16 in an Xbox-backed stream. The long-awaited sequel is confirmed for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Metro returns this week
4A Games has officially announced Metro 2039, with a full first-look reveal set for Thursday, April 16 in an Xbox-backed stream.
The event starts at 6pm UK, or 10am PT / 1pm ET, and marks the first proper showing of the next mainline Metro game since development was first confirmed back in 2020.
Xbox gets the spotlight
Deep Silver and 4A are framing the reveal around the series' long history on Xbox, but Metro 2039 is also listed for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
That makes this more of a marketing partnership than an exclusivity move, at least based on what has been announced so far.
Longest wait in the series
The gap since Metro Exodus has stretched to about seven years, easily the longest break between main entries.
That long wait could mean a bigger shift for the series, much like Exodus expanded the games beyond the tunnels and into a more open, surface-level journey across post-apocalyptic Russia.
- Metro 2033 launched in 2010
- Metro: Last Light followed in 2013
- Metro Exodus arrived in 2019
- Metro 2039 is next in line for 2026
Story still under wraps
4A hasn’t shared gameplay, plot details, or a release date yet. One big open question is whether the new game sticks close to Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels or pushes further into an original storyline.
The title itself suggests the series is moving beyond the timeline of the three main books, which ended with Metro 2035. If so, this could be the franchise’s clearest break yet from its original source material.
Leak got it right
A recent leak had already pointed to Metro 2039, and that rumor has now been confirmed by the official announcement.
