Netflix has announced Jim Mickle (Showrunner of Sweet Tooth) as director. In addition, they have teased the possibility of significant mech action scenes which would support the Gundam Franchise’s primary concept of using huge robots as military weapons.

Original Story; Familiar Setup

According to Netflix, the film tells the story of two people from opposing sides that become involved in a battle through out the solar system while dealing with changing alliances and a bigger threat that puts their lives at risk because if the outcome decides the future of humans.

This opens the door for many questions such as how close this film will be connected to previous Gundam canon and/or if it just uses the location, the politics and the mobile suits (mechs) common throughout all of the Gundam films and shows.

Huge Challenge for Netflix

This film will face similar challenges to other live-action Gundam films by trying to take the elements that make up the success of the anime series (war drama, cockpit tension and action-packed mech battles), without loosing the connection that fans have had with the franchise over the years.

To accomplish this will require either exceptional direction, or extremely expensive special effects, or possibly a combination of both.
