PS5 launch starts soft

Starfield sold an estimated 140,000 copies on PS5 in its first week after launching on April 7, according to estimates from Alinea Analytics.

That is a slow start for Microsoft's space RPG on Sony's console, although it's better compared to other recent Xbox titles.

Beating some Xbox ports

The early PS5 sales put Starfield ahead of several other recent Xbox-published games that made the jump to Sony's platform.

  • Avowed: about 54,000 copies sold on PS5 since its February release
  • Age of Empires 4: about 52,000 copies since its November 2025 PS5 launch
  • South of Midnight: about 16,000 copies after two weeks

By that measure, Starfield is off to a stronger start than some of Xbox's recent ports, even with its mixed reputation.

Still trailing bigger cross-platform launches

It is also behind some newer Microsoft releases on PS5. Estimates cited alongside the launch data show Ninja Gaiden 4 at 257,000, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 at 245,000, and The Outer Worlds 2 at 160,000.

That suggests Starfield has room to grow, but it has not matched Microsoft's stronger PS5 performers out of the gate.

Long-term picture still mixed

The broader sales history helps explain why expectations may have been higher. Alinea's Rhys Elliott said the Steam version had already sold about 3.7 million copies before the recent Free Lanes update, while roughly 1 million copies were sold on Xbox outside the more than 8 million players who tried it through Game Pass.

The PS5 version also launched with technical issues, and fixes are reportedly on the way. If updates improve player sentiment, the game could keep selling, even if it is unlikely to reach the PS5 highs seen by Sea of Thieves or Forza Horizon 5.
